Infrastructure and Operations Sourcing Assessment

Burton Group helps internal IT organizations develop a “business within a business” operational framework and make appropriate sourcing decisions—a reasoned make-versus-buy analysis—in the context of internal IT capabilities and outsourcing market dynamics.

Approach

Burton Group’s approach consists of the following two steps:

  • Assessment of Current IT Services
  • Analysis of Sourcing Alternatives for IT Services

In assessing the current IT services, Burton Group defines the organization’s IT services in the context of a well-defined service portfolio. Burton Group then reviews the alignment of those IT services to the current and emerging needs of the organization. Finally, Burton Group reviews the identified services from the following perspectives:

  • Service scope and intended benefits
  • Service attributes
  • Resource utilization (staff, costs)
  • Maturity of the service
  • Metrics associated with procurement, delivery and maintenance of the service
  • Service Levels (SLAs) associated with the service

The data to be collected may include information regarding business drivers, current and estimated future services, and service levels, resources, staffing, capital investment, and other factors relevant to the sourcing strategy. The resulting work product from this step will be used as input into the sourcing analysis performed in the second step.

The gap between the current and future conditions of IS service delivery, as defined earlier, identifies the desired impact of the sourcing decision in terms of service levels, resources, staffing, costs, and other considerations. Once this gap is clearly understood, Burton Group identifies and analyzes potential sourcing alternatives based on best practices from our project experience, existing research, and our industry knowledge of vendor service offerings.

As part of this analysis, Burton Group will identify the most viable option by analyzing high-level implementation considerations, service delivery impacts, and the organization’s business requirements, using the supplied data.
